When people say 1999 was one of the best years for film they're usually referring to respectable classics like FIGHT CLUB, THE MATRIX, or THE IRON GIANT, but let's not forget that 1999 also gave us the biggest, dumbest JAWS riff this side of the Atlantic. DEEP BLUE SEA is a go for broke shark attack movie that ups the ante by making the sharks SUPER-POWERED-BY-SCIENCE!!! That's right, folks, the sharks in this movie have had their brains beefed up by neuroscientists who are searching for a cure for Alzheimer's. If that logic doesn't add up, don't worry, you'll be too busy clapping with delight as these clever predators stalk a star-studded cast including Thomas Jane, Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J. Michael Rapaport, and Stellan Skarsgård. Renny Harlin (CLIFFHANGER, DIE HARD 2) directs with an eye for extreme violence and hyper-kinetic action that signals, for better or worse, the end of regular JAWS knock-offs and the beginning of the SHARKNADO era. Perhaps best remembered for a shocking kill that became a meme, there are plenty of other gems inside this silly treasure chest!
